Molecular and Biochemical Focus on the Xenobiotics-Detoxifying Biosystems : Research Significance and Potential Applications

Abstract

Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) in general and the Dioxins in particular are bioaccumulative environmental contaminants with proven toxic effects on humans, animals and plants. Thus, the sustainable removing of dioxins from contaminated terrestrial and aquatic environments is an inevitable challenge. Dioxin-contaminated soils are natural reservoir of microorganisms that presumably harbour potential biodegraders of such pollutants. Our research was focused on understanding of the biological events at molecular, biochemical and functional levels by which a microorganism can effectively uptake and assimilate the dioxins and certain petroleum hydrocarbons. Also, we are recently interested to the toxicological effects of dioxin on plant health. So, this EcotoxicoMic Webinar would be an interesting opportunity to shed light on our research in this topic.
